Peru likely to obtain US$ 800 million annual income for organic foods exports

Global demand of organic foods represents for Peru incomes for over US$ 800 million per year, in favor of 30,000 producers who export over 200,000 tons of their crops cultivated traditionally, declared Antonio Brack, Peru's Environment Minister.

In the closing ceremony of National Forum called “Transgenic Foods: Viability or not in Peru?”, at Congress, Minister Brack emphasized that Peru is one of the few countries that still cultivate crops according to ancestral traditions, and still in a competitive way.

“Organic agriculture offers healthy and safe foods without chemical fertilizers, pesticides or other synthetic compounds, and it requires rotation of cultivations to strengthen the ground, both in structure and in fertility,” the ministry said.

On that matter, he noted that Peru has 10,000 years of experience in biotechnology, with more than 3,000 types of potatoes, purple corn and color cotton.

He also pointed out that Peruvian organic foods are very well accepted in Europe and United States.
